Head of Student Welfare
De Montfort University
Phil originally worked in Forensic Mental Health Social Work before moving into Higher Education. He has worked in the sector for the last 16 years, the last 5 of which have been as Head of Student Welfare at De Montfort University.
Phil co-founded the UMHAN charity, and has contributed to several sector wide developments in collaboration with, amongst others including The Equality Challenge Unit, the Committee for the Promotion of Mental Well Being in Higher Education, and Student Finance England.
In his time at De Montfort University the Disability team has been shortlisted for five national awards. The Disability Enhancement Programme (DEP), which he designed and oversaw, as a whole institution approach to disability received praise from several sector wide organisations, was runner up in the Guardian University Awards, and is also currently shortlisted for a Times Higher Education award.
At the request of the Department for Education he wrote a significant part of the recent guidance: ‘Inclusive Practice as a route to excellence’. At the request of the Department of Business Information and Skills, he also wrote ‘Considering the needs of students with a mental health condition Resource for DSA Needs Assessors’ which was published in 2013.
